Reactions to Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill’s Doctor Who departure

The upcoming departures of Amy Pond and Rory Williams next series polarised opinion amongst fans, with forum member Mystical123 commenting that they will “miss” the “wonderful” pair.

“I’m going to miss both of them a lot, not just their characters but the actors who are always so wonderful in interviews,” Mystical said.

“Thinking about it, I’m more concerned that their departure is going to be ‘heartbreaking’ than that they’re leaving, which really was only a matter of time. If either Amy or Rory are killed off, I will not be happy.”

Toby Forrest agreed, calling the revelation “disappointing and sad news, but somehow hardly surprising”.

He added: “Part of me knew this would be coming. [I] will miss them both hugely.”

Phill Harris noted: “Really hope when they go there will always be a chance for them to return in the 50th special and beyond.”

smiddlehurst, meanwhile, disagreed with showrunner Steven Moffat’s decision to announce the exit of Gillan and Darvill so long before their final series airs.

“Did we have to be told officially out of the blue like this when we’re still months and months away from the series screening and with at least some vague details of what will happen?” they asked.

“First decision he’s made that I’ve really disagreed with and it just feels unnecessary… outstanding in the roles, easily the best companions since the series returned.

“We, all of us fans of Who, are losing two people who have been stunning ambassadors for the show and whether you like the characters (or actors) or not there’s no doubt that they’ve done a hell of a lot to promote and grow the show over the last two years and will almost certainly continue to do so in 2012 as well.”

Kyle West, though, said: “The show needed this, but why even bring them back? They had a good send off at the end of the last series.”

Sasha Holly Christina Wedge also welcomed the opportunity for change that came with Amy and Rory’s departure.

“I thought they had gone already?” she stated. “I’ve warmed to Amy a bit but I just really can’t wait for a new companion! The show needs something fresh.”

Elsewhere, Facebook user Nick Doonan spoke on behalf of Gillan’s many admirers by quipping: “Karen’s gorgeous though! Oh well, maybe now I’ll actually follow the storyline,” while Launch Fan hoped that Torchwood actor John Barrowman would become the next assistant to Matt Smith’s Doctor in time for Moffat to discover that “naked sex scenes [are] the key” to keeping fans happy.

Karen Gillan & Arthur Darvill to leave Doctor Who next series

Doctor Who stars Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill will be leaving the show during the next series, it has been confirmed.

The actors will depart their roles as The Doctor’s companions Amy Pond and Rory Williams midway through the show’s seventh run in 2012 in what was described as a “heartbreaking end”.

Showrunner Steven Moffat confirmed at a press screening that Matt Smith’s Time Lord will then be joined by “a new friend”, who has yet to be cast.

“The final days of the Ponds are coming during the next series,” he said. “I’m not telling you when or how, but that story is going to come to a heartbreaking end… Then The Doctor will meet a new friend.”

Moffat added that he believes River Song (Alex Kingston) will make a return appearance, though it is unknown if the character will be involved in the couple’s exit storyline.

It has been announced on the official Doctor Who Twitter profile that more details will be revealed tomorrow (December 16).

Smith stated: “The show will miss the Ponds, brilliantly played by Karen and Arthur, but the great thing about Doctor Who is its ability to change.

“We had the most incredible journey. We took over the show and we’ve really had to hold hands and help each other through it.

“So it’s very disappointing, but one has to remember that this show is about change and regeneration, and that’s what galvanizes it and pushes it forwards.”

Gillan and Darvill both made their Doctor Who debut as Amy and Rory in the first episode of the show’s fifth series in 2010.

Watch a video of Amy and Rory’s wedding party from the end of series five below:

Gillan told Digital Spy in August that she expected to be a part of the sci-fi’s seventh run.

Addressing Amy and Rory’s potential departure last month, the actress said: “Death would be an option. I don’t want Amy to pop up again every so often, because for me it would take away from the big, emotional goodbye. Once she’s gone, she’s gone. I want people to remember the Amy Pond era as a good one.”

Moffat revealed in November that Doctor Who’s seventh series will air next Autumn.
